Technology and Its Effects on Children Essay The use of technology has skyrocketed over the past few years, with a whopping ninetyfive percent of people utilizing the internet, constantly checking smartphones, and relying on other forms of media for entertainment, socializing, or work related instances. Compared with the digital satellites, MP3 players, and Palm Pilots of the 1990s, the technology today has truly advanced, causing many people to become dependent on media-related devices. More than fifty percent of today’s youth contribute to this dependency. What is not taken seriously enough is that this eagerness for technology is destroying the minds of young children by distracting them from important family values, causing various bullying issues, exposing them to violence, and inducing many health risks. Technology therefore should cease to exist in the lives of children, who should instead learn important life lessons from playing outside, utilizing talents, or spending time with the family. It is very important for a child to spend quality time with his or her family. Parents, grandparents, siblings, or extended family members help children develop positive self-esteem by communicating values, encouragement, and love. Today, children’s sense of those relationships is altered due to the fact that they are becoming less and less interested in family and instead more and more intrigued with media. The average kid ages eight to eighteen spends over seven and a half hours a day using technology, equaling seventy-five hours a week (Negative Effects Of). With all of that attention going to technology, children develop a loss of family interest. A group of four to six year olds said they would rather watch television than spend quality time with their fathers (Negative Effects Of). Story time with mother is rapidly being replaced with an old episode of Spongebob, thus creating disconnected children that do not find the value they should within their families. Every second a child is watching television or fiddling with an iPad is a second that should have been spent learning how to ride a bike, painting a picture, or reading with their parents to better the bond in the family relationship. While children are becoming less interested in their families, they are also gaining a false sense of privacy and leading themselves into a dangerous direction as to what they expose on the inter net. The youth of today do not realize that once something is posted online, it is there forever. One million children were harassed, threatened, or subjected to other forms of cyberbullying on Facebook during the past year (Cyberbullying Statistics). Many kids post embarrassing photos, statuses, or leak things on to the internet that they later regret, causing them to become a subject of harassment by others online or in school. There is a strong link between bullying and suicide, with bully victims being two to nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims (Bullying and Suicide). At five, more than fifty percent of kids regularly interact with a computer or tablet device (Clinton and Steyer). Because parents are not monitoring kids or enforcing certain rules in the household, such as coming up with limits as to the amount of time spent on the computer, many children waste away hours staring at a screen which can make them an easy target for those who bully via the in ternet. Not only are people unaware of potential consequences posed by the internettelevision is another main concern that poses risks for young children, who have impressionable minds. The generation of young kids may as well be called the â€Å"couch potato† generation, as they are spending up to six hours a day watching television, with their parents using TV as an â€Å"electronic babysitter† (Harris). Many believe that children’s programs show happy, colorful images that influence the child’s mind positively. However, what goes unknown is the fact that those â€Å"happy† and â€Å"colorful† programs actually average more than fourteen violent acts per houreight more than adult programs (TV Media’s Influence). Parents would obviously be appalled at this number due to the fact that by age eighteen, their child will have witnessed about two hundred thousand acts of violence, including eighteen thousand murders (TV Media’s Influence). Instead of subjecting children to the television that imprints their minds with violence, parents should instead spend quality time educating, playing, or reading with them. By doing this, the disgusting knowledge of crime and violence will not be apparent in a young child’s life. They will have a chance to remain unpolluted, their minds full of important family values versus mu rder and bloodbath. Exposure to television and media too early in a child’s life leads to health problems. By age three, one third of children have television sets in their bedrooms. This puts them at risk for delayed sleep onset, increased caloric intake, and nightmares from overstimulation (Stein). The excessive early exposure to electronic media correlates with language delay, attention problems, and deficits in executive function. What many people do not realize is that putting a child in front of a screen is not harmlessit greatly affects the way they transition into adulthood. On top of all of those problems, children who constantly sit in front of a television or game device have a risk of becoming obese. TV watching contributes to this by increasing sedentary behavior, teaching unhealthy eating patterns, increasing snacking, and interfering with normal sleep (Stein). Children should be outside playing with others, reading, and falling asleep at normal hours without a television in the room in order to prevent the health risks that have plagued many because of overuse of electronic media. Though technology is helpful in many ways, it is detrimental to chil dren when exposed regularly. Sitting a child down in front of the television, handing them a game console, and allowing hours of computer time greatly affects the way that child thinks, feels, and reacts to certain situations. Technology not only puts a dent in a child’s emotional state in regard to violent shows and commercials, but it affects their health as well, causing them to suffer great setbacks such as nightmares, increased caloric intake, and attention disorders. Even though the world is becoming more technologically advanced that does not mean children have to as well. They should be playing outside, reading, and spending time with the family in order to learn important values that they would not learn from using electronics.

The teenage years are for some the most traumatic or wonderful years they will ever experience.   Many experiences through these years decide how individuals will act as adults, the paths they will take in life, the careers they will choose, and if and how they raise their families.   I remember a choice that I made as a teenager that would forever change my life.   To this day, that choice still affects me. Choosing not to go to a party with my friends saved my life.   My friends were in a terrible car accident leaving the party, and one of them did not survive.   This experience has affected the choices I make today.   Because of the loss of my friend, I do not take unnecessary risks, I monitor my behavior in social situations, and I have a greater respect for life. Losing my friend when I was a teenager has made me very cautious about getting into potentially dangerous situations.   Just as the night I chose not to go to the party, I often opt out of celebrations that involve alcohol or have the potential to offer drugs.   I usually will go to the coffee shop or to dinner with a friend or family member instead.   Potentially dangerous or volatile friends scare me as well.   I don’t get close to risk takers for the fear of losing them. My group of friends in high school was a little bit wild, and since the night of the party that took my friend’s life, I have changed my circle of friends.   I don’t go to the clubs to drink, but will go to dance every now and again if I am going with another friend who is also planning on staying sober.   Even when I stay in, I do not partake in risky behaviors.   I do not drink alcohol or take drugs.   Unnecessary risks are just that; unnecessary. â€Å"Going out† doesn’t mean the same thing to me now as it did to me in high school.   Then, it was all about finding a place to party, listening to music, drinking alcohol illegally, and â€Å"hooking† up with people.   Since that fateful night years ago, I monitor my behavior in social situations very carefully.   Before even going out, I make sure that I have a safe friend to accompany me. I make sure that I am always prepared with a cell phone and extra money in case something happens and that someone in my family knows where I am at all times.   When I do go to a club to do some dancing, I don’t drink, and I leave well before 1 a.m., which is when people seem to be getting the most drunk and impaired.   Again, I try not to attract any risky people by portraying myself as wild.   I keep a careful eye on what is going on around me at all times.   I can still have fun, don’t get me wrong, but my friend’s death is never far from my memory when I am around alcohol. Since the loss of my friend, I value life much more.   As a teen, I thought I was invincible and that I knew it all, as most teens do.   I snuck around behind my parent’s backs without permission to do the things I wanted to do.   I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t care.   I did not see the value in my young life and the potential that I had for my future.   I did not care about my parents or family members’ feelings; I was very self-centered.   I just wanted to have fun and â€Å"live my life†. The moment I lost my friend, I realized that the only people who were guaranteed to be there for me through my life were my parents and my family.   I turned to them for support and guidance through the ordeal.   They became more special to me than they had been in a long time, and I valued them.   I also valued myself more since I saw how important I was to them.   I witnessed the grief of my friend’s family members and could not imagine my family having to face the same fate unnecessarily.   If I could prevent something terrible from happening to me, I would do that not only for myself, but for them as well. Teenagers think they are invincible.   They take risks.   Part of this is just growing up.   I took some risks that could have ended my life, and so did my friends.   Fortunately, I skipped out on that night and made a better choice.   Since that night I have also made better choices and it has improved my life tremendously.   I watch what I do and where I do it.   I am aware of my surroundings at all times.   I reach out to my family and keep in touch with them and let them know that I am OK.   I value my family and their support and love and realize what a special person I am in this world to them.   Because of tragedy, I have become a better person.   My friend’s death still haunts me, but it also keeps me sober and aware of my own precious life.

The Many Face of Freedom? Freedom is a concept that people are often willing to die for and it is the cause of much fighting. However, few people ever claim to dislike freedom. This raises an interesting question: how can people fight over what is generally considered to be a positive idea? Does this mean that someone must be against freedom? The answer is that people cannot agree on what freedom is, thus numerous groups can claim to be for freedom while strongly disagreeing on the means by which to achieve it. These groups often argue vehemently and passionately, trying to convince the majority that their side is right. However, emotion is only one part of deciding who is more persuasive. Freedom of speech played a key part in this argument, since the students believed in absolute freedom of speech, which the authorities often saw as dangerous. Other companies such as Impact International, Cisco, Unilever, Accenture and others offer flexible benefits to its employees (Greatplacetowork.net, 2017). They offer a range of core benefits such as life insurance, critical illness insurance and private medical insurance. Mars is one of the best multinational companies in Europe that provides the employees with competitive pay and benefits. There is fair compensation for all employees t hat is regarded as a significant motivational factor. Further, the organization allows planning for the retirement so that the employees have sufficient savings (Mars.com 2017). Hilton offers its employees with HHonors loyalty points and offers paid parental leave and reimbursements (Reviews.greatplacetowork.com 2017). Therefore, these companies use innovative methods to boost the motivational level of its employees. According to Zigarelli (2013), the trait and behaviour theories of leadership are different from each other. The trait theory states that a leader is born and they have personal characteristics such as driven and charismatic. However, the behaviourist theory states that leadership can be nurtured and taught by providing the people with effective skills of becoming a leader. It believes that a good leader can be made with proper training. Both the theories are valid as a lot of research have been conducted that forms the foundation and basis of the theories. Effective team leaders do not magically appear in the organizations. Some people may be natural leaders, but they can develop their skills for effective leadership. This can be explained using an example as a good leader needs discipline. The leader that shows potential can be selected. The leaders can develop discipline in personal and professional life. The leaders must demonstrate discipline by meeting deadlines, ending meetings on time, and keeping appointments. The leaders can develop their leadership skills by stepping out of the comfort zone and develop their leadership skills. Therefore, in this way the effective leaders can be selected and developed (Katzenbach and Smith 2015). Power and Politics According to the case study, If I were Samantha Parks, I would choose to prioritize tasks based on its level of difficulty. I would take a similar approach where the managers are advised not to sweat the small stuff. Delegating a small part of work to the employees shall allow me to focus on the bigger picture (Rees and Porter 2015). Samantha Parks can deal with the concern by stating the guidelines and describing her involvement in the project so that full control is not given. Samantha can control by setting deadlines for the people while collaborating with them and making changes. Executives must have minimal control over the projects. It is not appropriate to have control simply to have an authority over people but it should be done to be successful. They have a right to control projects as long as the project is not going in line and not running smoothly. There are a few tasks that the top executive must never choose to delegate to its employees such as setting vision. Vision is the essence of leadership and the employees must not hand over creating vision to someone else. Further, hiring decisions must be made by the top executives (Mueller and Vogelsmeier 2013). Organisational Change Sustaining innovation is an incremental innovation that enables or sustains an existing product. It does not create a new market for products, but it involves improvement and modifications in the existing ones. A few examples are Macintosh, iPhone, iPad, hard disk drives and mini laptops. These products made improvements in the already existing products so that the companies could survive in the dynamic market. Amongst all, iPhone and iPad were the two products that mainly affected me in the last year (Christensen and Raynor 2013). The disruptive innovations can be defined as an innovation that can create a new market by disrupting an existing market. A few examples of disruptive innovations are smartphone, digital electronic devices, Wikipedia, LCD and Ultrasound. These technologies have added comfort to the normal life and are available at cheaper prices. For the same reasons, I have welcomed these into my life as they have several benefits. My life has become comparatively easier and better because of such benefits. These disruptive innovations have made extensive complicated products affordable and accessible while targeting the price sensitive users (Reinhardt and Gurtner 2015). In the past 11 weeks, I have covered multiple topics on Organizational Behavior. I covered topics such as interpersonal skills, motivation, group behavior, leadership style, conflict management, structure, predominant leadership style and training. Every organization differs in cultural context in terms of ordering of beliefs, assumptions and values. For example, there are organizations that follow different set of training methods or leadership style for managing and developing the employees. The organizational culture adapts overtime to meet the changing demands and dynamic changes to gain competitive advantage. Motivation helps the organization to perform smoothly and efficiently (Zhong, Wayne and Liden 2016). All the practices are culturally relative as interpersonal skills can be developed using appropriate leadership style. All the practices are linked with one another and every factor is relatively important. The human resources put effort to reduce conflicts among the employe es which is a critical part of management. The organizations need quality staff to operate in an environment that goes through dynamic changes. It creates and sustains organizations competitive advantage. Organizational fit covers a range of organizational attributes which is the most common and frequently cited element that centres on the congruence between individual and organizational values (Kehoe and Wright 2013).
